Microblading Basics: A Short Guide with Expert Tips

Image

In this interview, we sit down with Sandra, an experienced PMU (Permanent Makeup) artist, to delve into the world of microblading. Sandra walks us through the procedure, from what clients can expect during the process to the aftercare required for optimal results. We discuss the benefits, potential risks, and why it’s essential to choose a certified artist. Whether you’re considering microblading for the first time or simply curious about the technique, this interview offers valuable insights into achieving flawless, natural-looking brows.

Can you start by explaining what microblading is?

Absolutely! Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo technique that creates the illusion of fuller eyebrows. I use a specialized handheld tool to make tiny, hair-like strokes in the skin, depositing pigment into these strokes. It’s perfect for people who want to enhance their natural brow shape or fill in sparse areas.

How does it differ from traditional eyebrow tattoos?

The main difference is the depth of the pigment. Traditional eyebrow tattoos penetrate deeper into the skin, making them more permanent. Microblading, on the other hand, only affects the outer layers of the skin. This means the results are semi-permanent and typically last 12-18 months. The strokes also mimic individual hairs, giving a more natural appearance compared to the solid fill of traditional tattoos.

### The Microblading Process

**Walk us through the microblading process. What can clients expect?**

The process starts with a consultation. I sit down with the client to discuss their expectations and the desired look. We also talk about any health conditions or skin sensitivities. Once we’re on the same page, I’ll map out the perfect brow shape, which is unique for every client.

Next comes the numbing cream. This makes the procedure more comfortable, though some clients may still feel a little scratching sensation. Once the area is numb, I use the microblade to create hair-like strokes. I typically do two passes to ensure the pigment is evenly deposited.

**How long does the entire procedure take?**

The whole process, including consultation, mapping, and the actual microblading, takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. The initial consultation might take longer, especially if we’re trying to figure out the perfect brow shape.

### Pain and Comfort During Microblading

**Many people are concerned about the pain. How painful is microblading?**

I get this question a lot! The truth is, everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but most of my clients describe the sensation as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The numbing cream I apply helps a lot. Some people say it feels like light scratching or a tingling sensation, while others feel nothing at all.

**So the numbing cream is key?**

Absolutely! I typically leave the numbing cream on for about 20 minutes before starting the procedure. If the client feels uncomfortable during the session, I can always reapply the cream to keep them comfortable.

### Healing and Aftercare

**Once the procedure is done, what does the healing process look like?**

The healing process lasts about four to six weeks. Right after the procedure, the brows will look darker than expected, but this is normal. Over the next few days, they’ll start to scab and peel. It’s really important not to pick at the scabs because this can cause pigment loss.

Here’s a general breakdown:

– **Days 1-3**: The brows look dark and bold.

– **Days 4-7**: Scabbing begins, and some clients might notice their brows peeling.

– **Days 8-10**: The scabs fall off, but the brows might look patchy.

– **Days 11-14**: Peeling ends, but the brows are much lighter than expected.

– **Weeks 4-6**: The final pigment begins to settle, and the true results are visible.

**What aftercare steps do you recommend?**

Aftercare is super important for optimal healing and maintaining the best results. For the first week, you should avoid getting your brows wet, so no swimming, saunas, or sweating. Also, no makeup on the brow area while it’s healing. I recommend blotting the area with a cotton pad to remove excess lymph fluid and applying the healing ointment I provide.

**How long should clients follow this aftercare routine?**

You’ll need to follow the aftercare instructions closely for about two weeks. After that, you can slowly return to your normal skincare routine, but avoid exfoliants around the brow area for the first month. Sun exposure can also cause premature fading, so I always recommend wearing sunscreen on your brows once they’re healed.

### How Long Does Microblading Last?

**You mentioned earlier that microblading lasts 12-18 months. What factors affect its longevity?**

The lifespan of microblading depends on a few things, mainly skin type and lifestyle. For example, people with oily skin tend to experience faster fading because the oils break down the pigment more quickly. Skincare products can also play a role. Exfoliating products, retinoids, and acids can all cause the pigment to fade faster. That’s why I always advise clients to avoid applying those products to their brow area.

**Do clients need to come in for touch-ups?**

Yes! Microblading is a two-step process. The first touch-up should be done 6-8 weeks after the initial treatment, once the brows have fully healed. This touch-up is important to fill in any areas that didn’t retain the pigment. After that, I recommend annual touch-ups to keep the brows looking fresh.

### Cost of Microblading

**How much does microblading typically cost?**

The cost can vary depending on the artist’s experience and location, but in the US, it usually ranges between $300 and $1,000. This price typically includes the initial treatment and the first touch-up. It might seem expensive, but remember, this is a semi-permanent solution that lasts up to 18 months, so it’s worth the investment.

**Is it better to go to a more expensive artist?**

Definitely! When it comes to microblading, you get what you pay for. It’s really important to choose an experienced and certified artist who knows what they’re doing. Cheaper artists might cut corners on safety and hygiene or use lower-quality pigments, which can lead to poor results or complications.

### Risks and Complications

**What are some of the risks involved with microblading?**

While microblading is generally safe, there are some risks. Infection is the most common risk, especially if proper sanitation practices aren’t followed. That’s why I’m meticulous about keeping my workspace clean and using sterile tools. Allergic reactions to pigments are rare but can happen, which is why I always perform a patch test beforehand.

There’s also a risk of scarring if the artist applies too much pressure or if the client picks at their scabs during healing. Uneven pigment retention can also occur, but that’s usually fixed during the touch-up.

**Are there any conditions that make someone unsuitable for microblading?**

Yes, certain health conditions can make microblading risky. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those with autoimmune diseases, or anyone undergoing chemotherapy should avoid the procedure. It’s also not recommended for people with active skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema near the brow area.

### Choosing the Right Microblading Artist

**What advice do you have for someone looking to choose a microblading artist?**

The first thing is to check the artist’s certification and training. Microblading is a specialized skill, and proper training is essential. Also, look at their portfolio. Before-and-after photos will give you an idea of the artist’s style and quality of work. Don’t be afraid to ask for reviews from previous clients. Finally, hygiene is crucial. Make sure the artist uses sterile tools and follows proper sanitation practices.

**Is it a good idea to have a consultation before booking the procedure?**

Absolutely! The consultation is an important step. It gives the artist a chance to assess your skin and determine the best approach for your brows. It also gives you the opportunity to ask questions and make sure you’re comfortable with the artist’s style and expertise.

**What’s the most important thing clients should know before getting microblading?**

I’d say the most important thing is to have realistic expectations. Microblading can create beautiful, natural-looking brows, but it’s not a permanent solution. Fading is natural, and touch-ups are necessary to maintain the look. Also, following aftercare instructions is crucial for the best results. If you choose the right artist and take good care of your brows, you’ll love the outcome!
